What's Happening?
At the Mobile World Congress 2026, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) announced significant financial commitments from Saudi Arabia's Mobily and Qatar's Ooredoo Group to its Partner2Connect Digital Coalition. Mobily has pledged $1.715 billion
towards enhancing data centers, subsea cables, and 5G infrastructure, aligning with Saudi Vision 2030. Ooredoo will invest $500 million in expanding optical fiber infrastructure across the MENA region. These investments aim to bridge the digital divide by improving connectivity and supporting economic growth through resilient network infrastructure.
Why It's Important?
The pledges from Mobily and Ooredoo are crucial in advancing the ITU's goal of universal, meaningful connectivity. By enhancing digital infrastructure, these investments can provide affordable and reliable internet access, fostering digital inclusion and economic development. The initiative supports global efforts to connect remote communities, offering life-changing opportunities for millions currently offline. The commitments also reflect the strategic importance of digital connectivity in achieving broader economic and social objectives, particularly in regions with limited access to digital resources.
