What's Happening?
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has launched a bilingual online course titled 'Fundamentals of Food Safety in the Near East and North Africa Region' to mark World Food Safety Day
2026. The course, available in English and Arabic, aims to enhance food safety competencies across the region. It was developed by the FAO's Regional Office for the Near East and North Africa and the FAO Virtual Learning Center, in collaboration with experts from academia, food control authorities, and the food industry. The launch event, attended by over 400 participants from 19 countries, included a high-level panel discussion on the importance of partnerships, innovation, and science-based decision-making in building resilient food safety systems.

This initiative is significant as it addresses the growing need for robust food safety systems in the Near East and North Africa, regions that face unique challenges due to climate change and evolving food safety threats.
