What's Happening?
The John and Annie Glenn Museum in New Concord and the National Road & Zane Grey Museum in Norwich are actively seeking volunteers as they prepare to open for the 2026 season starting May 1. These museums, managed by the Museum Association of East Muskingum
and owned by Ohio History Connection, are looking for new volunteer tour guides and actors to enrich the visitor experience. The museums will operate from May through October, with specific hours set for Wednesday through Sunday. Volunteers can choose to work weekly, biweekly, or during scheduled group tours. Operations Director Debbie Allender emphasized the enjoyment volunteers derive from their roles and the need for more individuals to join. Training sessions are scheduled for April 11 at both museum locations, with flexibility for additional training times if necessary.
Why It's Important?
Volunteering at these museums offers a unique opportunity for individuals interested in local history to contribute to the community. By participating, volunteers help preserve and promote Ohio's rich cultural heritage, ensuring that visitors have an engaging and educational experience. This initiative not only supports the museums' operations but also fosters community involvement and pride. The call for volunteers highlights the importance of civic engagement in maintaining and enhancing cultural institutions, which play a crucial role in education and tourism. The involvement of volunteers can significantly impact the museums' ability to offer diverse and interactive programs, thereby attracting more visitors and boosting local tourism.
What's Next?
As the museums prepare for the upcoming season, they will continue to recruit volunteers and conduct training sessions to ensure readiness for the influx of visitors. The success of this volunteer recruitment drive could lead to expanded programs and events, enhancing the museums' offerings. Stakeholders, including local businesses and community leaders, may support these efforts by promoting volunteer opportunities and encouraging participation. The museums may also explore partnerships with educational institutions to attract students interested in history and museum studies, further enriching the volunteer pool.
