What's Happening?
The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) has announced the opening of applications for the Beginning Farmer Equipment and Infrastructure Grant. This initiative, established by the Minnesota Legislature,
aims to support new farmers by providing financial assistance for essential equipment and infrastructure investments. Eligible projects include the purchase of agricultural equipment for crop production, livestock raising, and farm product storage, as well as infrastructure improvements like water access, irrigation systems, and livestock handling facilities. To qualify as a 'beginning' farmer, applicants must be within their first 10 years of farming. Priority is given to those with recent farm sales under $100,000 and limited land access. The MDA plans to award up to $700,000 in total funding, with individual grants ranging from $1,000 to $10,000, requiring a 25% match for requests over $2,000. Applications are due by March 26, with an online information session scheduled for February 19.
