What's Happening?
The National Women in Agriculture Symposium has commenced in Fiji, bringing together over 200 women under the theme 'Women at the Helm: Empowering Fiji’s Women Farmers, Fishers, Processors and Foresters to Access and Grow Markets.' The event aims to enhance
skills and expand opportunities for women in agriculture. DFAT Counsellor Andrew Shepherd emphasized the importance of leadership and climate-smart farming. Participants like dairy farmer Preetika Devi Raj and jeweler Mereoni Naikanitoba are eager to learn and overcome barriers in their fields.
Why It's Important?
This symposium is significant as it highlights the role of women in agriculture, a sector crucial for food security and economic development. By empowering women, the event seeks to create more inclusive and resilient food systems in Fiji and the region. The focus on leadership and market access can lead to stronger economies and improved livelihoods for women, who are often underrepresented in agricultural decision-making. The symposium also addresses climate-smart practices, which are vital for sustainable agriculture in the face of climate change.
