What's Happening?
The Southeastern Public Service Authority (SPSA) in Virginia has partnered with AMP Robotics Corp. to implement AI technology aimed at extending the lifespan of its regional landfill. The landfill, which
serves over a million residents, was projected to reach capacity by 2060. However, with the integration of AI and robotics, the capacity is now expected to last until 2095. The AI system, known as Smart Sortation, uses cameras and pneumatic jets to efficiently sort waste, significantly reducing the volume sent to the landfill. A pilot program demonstrated a 58% reduction in landfill materials, and the new system will provide monthly performance reports to ensure transparency and accountability.
