What's Happening?
Hanwha Ocean, a South Korean company, is preparing a bid to supply the Royal Thai Navy with a new multi-purpose frigate. The proposed design, Ocean-40F, was showcased at the Defense & Security 2025 show in Bangkok.
This new frigate is larger and more lethal than the Bhumibol Adulyadej-class frigate previously supplied by Hanwha Ocean in 2018. The Ocean-40F features advanced weaponry, including Exocet MM40 Block 3C surface-to-surface missiles and a vertical launching system for VL-MICA surface-to-air missiles. The design reflects feedback from the Thai Navy, emphasizing the need for a more capable vessel.
Why It's Important?
The bid by Hanwha Ocean to supply a new frigate to the Royal Thai Navy signifies the ongoing modernization and expansion of Thailand's naval capabilities. This development is crucial for maintaining regional security and addressing maritime challenges in Southeast Asia. The enhanced firepower and capabilities of the proposed frigate could bolster Thailand's defense posture, potentially influencing regional naval dynamics. The collaboration also highlights the strategic partnership between South Korea and Thailand in defense technology, which may lead to further military cooperation and technological exchange.
