What's Happening?
Helen Cooke, the chief executive of MyPlus, a consultancy that aids disabled individuals in securing employment, has been appointed as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). Cooke, who uses
a wheelchair due to a childhood spinal cord injury, expressed her pride and humility upon receiving the honor. MyPlus, founded in 2006, collaborates with companies to foster inclusive workplaces and offers specialized career advice to students. Cooke's career began at Marks & Spencer, followed by a decade at Mars, where she worked in HR and recruitment. Her recognition comes as a testament to her efforts in promoting employment opportunities for disabled individuals, a mission she has pursued despite the absence of the Disability Discrimination Act during her early career.
Why It's Important?
Cooke's recognition highlights the ongoing challenges and progress in the employment of disabled individuals. With an estimated one-third of students expected to be classified as disabled by 2030, her work underscores the importance of inclusive employment practices. This honor not only acknowledges Cooke's contributions but also brings attention to the need for businesses to adapt and leverage the talents of disabled individuals. The award serves as a reminder of the barriers that still exist and the necessity for continued advocacy and policy development to ensure equal career opportunities for all.
