California has secured a second settlement with over 70 parties, including Texas Instruments, to recover additional funding for the containment of the Vine Hill Complex, a closed hazardous waste landfill in Contra Costa County. The landfill, which ceased
operations in 1989, continues to pose a threat of releasing toxic substances into the environment, such as arsenic, lead, and benzene, detected in groundwater. This new agreement follows a 2021 consent decree with 57 parties. Under the terms of the second settlement, each participating defendant will pay $117.78 per ton of waste they sent to the facility. This amount is calculated by dividing the total facility costs, exceeding $175 million, by approximately 1.46 million tons of total waste. While some companies like Calistoga Holdings face payments of around $768,000 for over 6,000 tons of waste, Texas Instruments is among those with smaller settlements, contributing approximately $1,500 for 12 to 13 tons of waste.
