The California Energy Commission has unanimously approved the nation's first standards for tire efficiency, a move projected to save drivers approximately $1 billion annually and reduce carbon dioxide
emissions by 2 million tons per year. The new rule, which has been in development since 2003, aims to ensure that replacement tires sold in California are at least as energy efficient, on average, as original equipment tires. It will also establish a 'leaf' rating labeling system to help consumers identify more efficient options. The regulations will be phased in, with the first phase targeting the most inefficient tires starting in 2029, and stricter standards beginning in 2033. Exemptions include snow tires and competition tires, while all-weather tires will be tracked for potential future regulation. The commission estimates that while more efficient tires may cost slightly more upfront ($6 to $26 per set), these costs are offset by fuel savings of $85 to $153 over the tire's lifetime.
