What's Happening?
The Water & Soil Accelerator (WASA) Program, implemented by the International Water Management Institute in partnership with CIMMYT, is making strides in Central Malawi by promoting climate-smart soil and water management practices. The program focuses
on Conservation Agriculture (CA) techniques such as minimum soil disturbance, crop residue retention, and crop diversification. In its first year, WASA has conducted mega demonstrations to test drought-tolerant varieties and soil management practices, providing farmers with practical options to improve water use and soil health. The program's participatory co-learning approach has engaged farmers, researchers, and field staff in hands-on training, fostering a deeper understanding of the practices being tested.

The WASA Program is crucial in addressing the challenges faced by smallholder farmers in Malawi, who are increasingly affected by unpredictable weather patterns and declining soil fertility.
