What's Happening?
The Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (Malba) has acquired the Daros Latinamerica Collection, consisting of 1,233 works by 117 artists. This acquisition, led by Argentine real-estate developer and collector Eduardo F. Costantini, marks a significant
expansion of Malba's collection, now totaling nearly 3,000 works. The Daros collection, previously housed in Zurich, is rich in post-1950 art and includes key works by artists such as Ana Mendieta, Hélio Oiticica, and Doris Salcedo. The acquisition will necessitate an expansion of the museum to accommodate the new works, with construction set to begin in late 2026 and completion expected by 2029.
Why It's Important?
This acquisition is a major milestone for Malba, enhancing its status as a leading institution for Latin American art. By bringing the Daros collection back to the region, Malba strengthens its cultural and historical ties to Latin American art. The expansion of the museum will not only provide more space for exhibitions but also enhance its role as a cultural hub. This move could attract more visitors and scholars, boosting the local economy and cultural tourism. It also highlights the growing importance of Latin American art in the global art market.
What's Next?
The Daros collection will remain in Europe until June 2026, with a selection of works to be displayed in September 2026, coinciding with Malba's 25th anniversary. The museum's expansion will increase its space to approximately 90,000 square feet, allowing for more comprehensive exhibitions. This development may inspire other institutions to invest in Latin American art, potentially leading to increased recognition and appreciation of the region's cultural contributions.
