What's Happening?
MDU Resources Group Inc. has joined the North Plains Connector utility consortium, becoming the seventh utility to participate in the development of a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line.
This project aims to connect the Eastern and Western Interconnections, enhancing the reliability and resiliency of the U.S. electric grid. MDU Resources signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MOU) for 150 megawatts of capacity on the 420-mile North Plains Connector project. The consortium includes other utilities such as Avista, Portland General Electric, and Puget Sound Energy. The project is expected to create over 800 jobs during construction and will transport electrical power bidirectionally based on market needs.
Why It's Important?
The North Plains Connector project represents a significant investment in the U.S. energy infrastructure, aiming to improve grid reliability and market connections across three regional electric energy markets. By participating, MDU Resources and other utilities are contributing to a more resilient and interconnected electric grid, which is crucial for meeting growing electricity demands. This project also supports the transition to cleaner energy sources by facilitating the movement of power from various generation sources, potentially reducing reliance on fossil fuels and enhancing energy security.
What's Next?
Construction of the North Plains Connector is expected to begin in 2028, with operations commencing in 2032. As the project progresses, stakeholders will likely focus on negotiating definitive agreements and securing necessary funding. The successful completion of this project could lead to further collaborations among utilities to enhance grid infrastructure and expand renewable energy integration.
