The PRIMA wireless retinal implant, designed to restore functional vision in people with geographic atrophy, has received CE marking, allowing its sale across 30 European countries. Developed by Science Corp., the implant is intended for patients with advanced
dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a condition that affects over five million people worldwide. The implant works by using a chip placed beneath the damaged retina, which receives processed images from specialized glasses and stimulates retinal cells to restore vision. The approval follows successful trials where 81% of participants showed significant improvement in vision. The system does not restore normal eyesight but offers a significant improvement for those affected by AMD.
