What's Happening?
Lidl GB is set to donate approximately 100 tonnes of surplus food from its UK stores on Christmas Eve as part of its Feed it Back programme. This initiative, in partnership with the community platform Neighbourly, aims to redistribute surplus food to local
charities across the nation. The donation is expected to help create over 238,000 Christmas meals for those in need. This effort is part of Lidl GB's broader food redistribution strategy, which has already supported over 4 million people in 2025. The Christmas Eve donation will include a variety of high-quality surplus products such as bakery items, fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, poultry, and seasonal goods. The redistribution will be facilitated by Lidl store teams and local volunteers working with charity partners. Additionally, Lidl GB has been involved in other community support initiatives, including a Christmas Toy Bank and grants totaling over £150,000 to more than 600 good causes.
Why It's Important?
This initiative by Lidl GB highlights the growing importance of corporate social responsibility, particularly in addressing food waste and supporting vulnerable communities. By redistributing surplus food, Lidl not only helps reduce waste but also provides essential support to those in need during the festive season. This effort underscores the role of retailers in contributing to social welfare and sustainability. The initiative also reflects a broader trend in the retail industry towards more sustainable practices and community engagement. For local charities, this donation represents a significant resource to aid in their efforts to support individuals and families facing food insecurity. The collaboration with Neighbourly further exemplifies the potential of partnerships between businesses and community organizations to create positive social impact.
