What's Happening?
Precure, an initiative launched by the Mayo Clinic and founding partner Thermo Fisher Scientific, has selected Helix as its multiomics laboratory and AI tools provider. This collaboration aims to generate molecular data from approximately one million
biospecimens to integrate molecular insights into routine clinical care at the Mayo Clinic and other health systems. Helix will supply advanced AI tools for genomics delivery in clinical settings and biomarker-driven research, alongside population-scale multiomic capabilities, including clinical whole genome sequencing (WGS) and research-grade proteome sequencing. The objective is to create new opportunities for disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment by linking this data with longitudinal clinical information and high-performance computing infrastructure.
Why It's Important?
This partnership is significant for advancing precision medicine in the U.S. healthcare system. By leveraging Helix's expertise in genomic sequencing, data infrastructure, and AI, Precure seeks to make clinical whole genome sequencing and multiomics a foundational element of patient care. This approach aims to detect diseases earlier and enable more proactive interventions, potentially transforming how the life sciences community understands disease development before symptoms manifest. The integration of population-scale molecular data with clinical expertise and de-identified longitudinal health information is expected to accelerate the development of new healthcare applications and improve patient outcomes across a broad spectrum of conditions.
What's Next?
Building on the Mayo Clinic’s Tapestry study, which utilized Helix’s Exome+ sequencing technology, Precure will extend this collaboration by deploying Helix’s workflow orchestration and CLIA/CAP genomic sequencing services. Precure and Helix have also chosen Ultima Genomics’ UG200™ Ultra Sequencing Platform to generate genomic data for WGS and proteomic read-outs at scale. Helix will join Precure as a collaborator and minority owner, with any financial returns to the Mayo Clinic being reinvested into its mission of patient care, research, and education. This initiative is poised to establish the genome as an enduring patient resource, providing a precision baseline for a lifetime of care.
Beyond the Headlines
The collaboration between Precure, the Mayo Clinic, Thermo Fisher Scientific, and Helix represents a concerted effort to bridge the gap between cutting-edge genomic research and practical clinical application. By focusing on population-scale molecular data and advanced AI tools, this initiative has the potential to redefine diagnostic and therapeutic strategies, moving towards a more predictive and personalized healthcare model. The ethical implications of managing and utilizing such vast amounts of patient data, particularly concerning privacy and data security, will be paramount. This endeavor could set new standards for integrating multiomics into routine medical practice, fostering a new era of precision health that benefits a wider population.
