What's Happening?
Scarsdale's Food Scrap Program has expanded to include a wider range of items beyond just food. Residents can now recycle wooden and bamboo chopsticks, toothpicks, popsicle sticks, wax and parchment paper,
and more. The program accepts anything that comes from nature, such as seafood shells, meat and poultry bones, eggshells, nut shells, coffee grounds, and tea bags. Even processed foods and candy can be composted. This initiative aims to divert millions of pounds of organic matter from landfills, turning it into compost and promoting environmental sustainability.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of Scarsdale's Food Scrap Program is a significant step towards reducing landfill waste and promoting environmental sustainability. By allowing a broader range of items to be composted, the program encourages residents to participate more actively in recycling efforts. This initiative not only helps reduce the community's carbon footprint but also raises awareness about the importance of sustainable waste management practices. As more communities adopt similar programs, it could lead to a larger cultural shift towards environmental responsibility and conservation.
