Peter Anthony Ruocco, a distinguished electrical engineer and World War II veteran, passed away at the age of 97 on January 29, 2026. Born in Bangor, Maine, Ruocco was the first in his Italian family to be born in the United States. After serving in the U.S.
Navy during World War II, he pursued a career in telecommunications, earning degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maine and Northeastern University. Ruocco's career spanned several decades at Western Electric, AT&T, and Lucent Technologies, where he became a director and was instrumental in developing the national telephone electronic switching system. His contributions to the 4ESS and 5ESS systems were pivotal in advancing global communications. Ruocco was also a devoted family man, married to his childhood friend Marion Treadwell for 66 years, and was actively involved in his community and church.
