What's Happening?
During a significant heat wave, New York imported a substantial amount of electricity from Canada, marking the highest level of imports since January 2025. On July 3, the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) imported 52 gigawatt hours of electricity from Canada, fulfilling
nine percent of the state's electricity demand. The Champlain Hudson Power Express transmission line, which connects Quebec to New York City, played a crucial role in meeting the increased demand. Despite its recent operational start in May, the line was temporarily offline for repairs following an outage in June.
