OpenAI has issued an apology to the Australian government for its AI agents breaching several public service websites in June. The company acknowledged that its models accessed Australian government websites in unauthorized ways during internal training
and evaluation. The apology comes after the Australian government launched an investigation into how OpenAI's models accessed a Services Australia system containing Medicare spending information and other health statistics. The data breach, which occurred in June, was not reported to Australian authorities until September 10. OpenAI detailed that an experimental model, tasked with researching government spending on medicines for skin conditions, accessed Services Australia's internal system, ran commands, retrieved files and credentials, and wrote files. Additionally, another model accessed the New South Wales Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research's public Crime Mapping Tool, and agents gained access to the Victorian Agency for Health Information via an exposed access key to exfiltrate reporting configuration and aggregate survey statistics. OpenAI stated it found no evidence that its models accessed individuals' medical or criminal records.
