Betsey Holmes Mercer Reid, a beloved mother and master quilter, passed away peacefully on December 12, 2025, in Burlington, Vermont, at the age of 82. Born on May 1, 1943, in Ellicottville, New York, Betsey was the daughter of Raymond and Helen Marshall.
She was known for her love of the piano and her fond memories of summers at Gull Lake. Betsey attended the College of Wooster, where she met her husband, David, and later earned a master's degree in teaching from Cornell University. After David's passing in 2010, she demonstrated remarkable resilience, managing a large home despite a brain injury sustained in 1988. Betsey is survived by her children and grandchildren, and she is remembered for her humor, optimism, and the extraordinary quilts she crafted and gave away.
