have identified Acinetobacter baumannii, a pathogen known for its resistance to last-resort antibiotics, in both animals and humans. The study, published in Applied and Environmental Microbiology, analyzed genetic data from 509 samples of A. baumannii collected from animals across 17 countries. The findings suggest that companion animals such as cats, dogs, and horses may carry strains of the bacteria that are genetically similar to those found in humans, with genome similarity scores above 99 percent. This indicates a higher potential for intertransmission between pets and humans compared to livestock and wildlife. The study emphasizes the need for more species-specific pathogen sampling to better understand the transmission dynamics.
