What's Happening?
The Fullerton Fire Department's Emergency Manager, Kristi Hofstetter Batiste, hosted the third 'Seniors Fight Back' workshop at the Hunt Library on August 16, 2025. This free event, aimed at older adults, attracted over 25 participants and focused on personal safety and self-defense. The workshop provided crucial information on maintaining a safe personal environment and included hands-on training in both offensive and defensive maneuvers. Participants learned techniques such as using an elbow to strike an aggressor and practiced countering an attacker by clasping hands around the attacker's neck without interlocking fingers. The session concluded with attendees receiving self-defense tools like pepper spray and personal alarms.
Why It's Important?
As seniors often face unique safety challenges, programs like 'Seniors Fight Back' are vital in empowering them with the skills and confidence needed to protect themselves. By focusing on situational awareness and practical self-defense techniques, the workshop helps reduce the vulnerability of older adults to potential threats. This initiative not only enhances personal safety but also fosters a sense of community and support among participants. As the senior population continues to grow, such programs are increasingly important in promoting independence and security for older adults.
