Recent research has highlighted significant issues in the field of electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate (NO3−) and nitrite (NO2−) to ammonia (NH3), known as NOx reduction. A study reviewed 411 papers
published between January 2023 and June 2024, finding that approximately 60% of these studies used pH and NOx concentration combinations that do not align with viable NOx-laden water sources. This misalignment suggests that much of the research may not effectively translate into practical applications. The study emphasizes the need for better matching of experimental conditions to real-world scenarios to improve the applicability of NOx reduction catalysts.
