What's Happening?
Nigeria has introduced the Lagos State Building Insurance Scheme, a pilot initiative aimed at improving compliance with compulsory insurance laws and mitigating risks associated with building collapses. Backed by the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM)
and the Lagos State Government, the scheme uses digital platforms and geospatial data to ensure buildings are insured against risks like fire and structural collapse. The initiative is designed to serve as a template for nationwide implementation, potentially expanding the insurance market by covering previously uninsured assets.
Why It's Important?
The Lagos State Building Insurance Scheme represents a significant step towards enhancing urban resilience and consumer protection in Nigeria. By providing a structured model for building insurance, the scheme addresses the financial vulnerabilities exposed by frequent building collapses. It also offers a scalable solution that could be adopted by other states, thereby increasing insurance penetration and strengthening the financial safety net for millions of Nigerians. For insurers, the scheme presents an opportunity to diversify portfolios and grow premiums in a historically underinsured segment, while also raising expectations for service delivery and claims performance.
