What's Happening?
The University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) has partnered with the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine at Arkansas State University (NYITCOM at A-State) to create an accelerated seven-year medical degree pathway. This
program will allow students to earn a bachelor's degree from UALR and a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from NYITCOM in a condensed timeframe. Up to 10 students annually will be admitted through a joint admissions process, primarily targeting students in UALR's Donaghey College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, particularly those studying biology, chemistry, physics, and math. Current UALR freshmen and sophomores are eligible to apply, with juniors considered on a case-by-case basis. A significant aspect of this pathway is the potential for conditional admission without requiring the traditional Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), placing greater emphasis on sustained academic performance in rigorous science coursework. The first cohort is anticipated to begin in spring 2027.

NYITCOM at A-State Dean Shane Speights highlighted that over 60% of their Arkansas graduates practice in the state, a figure that rises to above 95% for those who complete their residency in Arkansas. The removal of the MCAT as a mandatory barrier for conditionally admitted students could broaden access to medical education for a more diverse group of aspiring physicians, potentially reducing financial burdens associated with test preparation and multiple attempts. This partnership marks UALR as the first institution outside the ASU System to collaborate with NYITCOM at A-State on such an accelerated undergraduate pathway, indicating a growing trend in medical education to streamline the path to becoming a doctor.
What's Next?
The first cohort of students for the accelerated medical degree pathway is expected to commence in spring 2027. Interested UALR students will need to declare their intention to apply to NYITCOM at A-State or its New York campus by the end of their sophomore year and will undergo interviews with NYITCOM during their junior year. The program will continue to admit up to 10 students annually, with ongoing efforts to identify and recruit eligible candidates from UALR's science and mathematics programs. The success of this program could lead to further expansion or similar partnerships between other Arkansas institutions and medical schools, contributing to a more robust healthcare workforce in the state.
