What's Happening?
Connecticut's Congressional delegation and Governor Ned Lamont have announced significant funding for the expansion of the Connecticut State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown. The project will receive a $584,250 grant from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs,
complemented by $294,250 in state funding. This expansion, overseen by the Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA), aims to create 1,510 additional grave sites for buried cremains on a parcel of land adjacent to the existing cemetery at 317 Bow Lane. This property was formerly part of the Connecticut Valley Hospital and was recently transferred to the DVA for this purpose. The state's portion of the funding will be used for the demolition of a vacant building, while federal funds will cover the cost of burial plots, an entry gate, fencing, landscaping, irrigation, storage bays, site furnishings, and supporting infrastructure.

This funding is crucial for ensuring that Connecticut veterans and their eligible family members continue to have access to a dignified final resting place. The DVA estimates that the existing cemetery's cremation burial plots will be depleted by January 2028. With this expansion, the availability of cremation burial plots is projected to extend through at least December 2033.
