What's Happening?
Exmoor National Park has introduced a new boardwalk designed to improve accessibility and protect the natural landscape of Porlock Marshes. The boardwalk, which features a soft curve to blend with the environment, aims to provide year-round access for
walkers while allowing natural water flow. This initiative addresses the flooding issues that have affected the South West Coast Path in recent years. The project was led by Exmoor ranger Charlotte Wray and funded through donations from The Best of Exmoor, a fundraiser, and the South West Coast Path Association. The boardwalk is constructed from timber sourced within Exmoor, emphasizing sustainability and local resource use.
Why It's Important?
The new boardwalk is significant as it enhances public access to a popular walking route while preserving the ecological integrity of the marshland. By allowing natural water flow, the boardwalk helps maintain the habitat's health, which is crucial for local biodiversity. This project also highlights the importance of sustainable tourism and conservation efforts, as it balances human access with environmental protection. The initiative serves as a model for other natural parks facing similar challenges, demonstrating how infrastructure can be designed to complement and protect natural landscapes.
