What's Happening?
Damen Shipyards Antalya has initiated a project to deliver thirteen new Search and Rescue (SAR) 1906 vessels to the Turkish Coast Guard. This initiative is part of an EU-funded project aimed at enhancing the operational capacity of the Turkish Coast Guard. The
project involves collaboration with the UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM), the Turkish Coast Guard, and other stakeholders. The vessels, designed for high-speed and all-weather operations, will be constructed at Damen Shipyards Antalya and are expected to be delivered between 2027 and 2028. These vessels are part of ongoing efforts to improve maritime safety and rescue operations in the region.
Why It's Important?
The delivery of these SAR vessels is crucial for enhancing maritime safety and rescue operations in the Mediterranean, a region frequently traversed by migrants and refugees. The project underscores the EU's commitment to supporting Turkey in managing migration and improving search and rescue capabilities. The collaboration between international organizations and the Turkish government highlights the importance of coordinated efforts in addressing humanitarian challenges at sea. The new vessels will bolster the Turkish Coast Guard's ability to conduct effective rescue missions, potentially saving thousands of lives and contributing to regional stability.
