A recent study published in Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine has highlighted the benefits of minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS) over traditional median sternotomy in terms of inflammatory recovery. The research focused on patients undergoing
elective mitral valve repair or replacement, comparing the two surgical approaches using the Systemic Inflammation Response Index (SIRI). The study found that while both methods triggered similar initial inflammatory responses, patients who underwent MICS experienced a faster normalization of inflammation by the fifth postoperative day. This suggests that MICS, despite longer operative times, may offer a more favorable biological environment for recovery by minimizing tissue trauma.

The findings of this study are significant as they challenge the traditional belief that longer cardiopulmonary bypass times inherently lead to greater physiological stress.
