What's Happening?
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has opened applications for a six-month SDG Finance and Private Sector Development Research Internship. This remote opportunity, also listing Istanbul, Türkiye, as a location, is designed for students and recent
graduates to gain practical experience in sustainable finance, impact investing, development research, and communications. The intern will work within UNDP’s Sustainable Finance Hub (SFH) and the Istanbul International Center for Private Sector in Development (ICPSD), contributing to research and knowledge products that explore how financing and private-sector engagement can advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Eligible candidates must be enrolled in a postgraduate degree, in the final academic year of a first university degree, a recent university graduate, or enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship. Fluency in written and spoken English is required, with French and Arabic being desirable. The UNDP provides a monthly stipend to eligible interns not financially supported by other institutions.
Why It's Important?
This internship is significant as it fosters the development of expertise in sustainable finance and private sector engagement, critical areas for achieving global development objectives. By involving students and recent graduates, the UNDP is cultivating the next generation of professionals who can drive impact investing and SDG financing. The focus on remote work expands accessibility, allowing a broader pool of talent to contribute to international development efforts. The research conducted by interns will directly support UNDP's mission to mobilize and align financing towards national development priorities and the SDGs, potentially influencing policy and investment strategies globally. This initiative also highlights the growing importance of private sector involvement in addressing complex development challenges, moving beyond traditional aid models.
What's Next?
The application period for the internship closes on October 30, 2026. Following the selection process, successful candidates will commence their six-month remote internship, contributing to UNDP's research and knowledge management activities. The insights and findings generated from this internship are expected to inform UNDP's ongoing projects and partnerships aimed at strengthening private-sector contributions to sustainable development. The program will continue to seek out and engage young talent, providing them with valuable exposure to the workings of a United Nations agency and practical experience in a rapidly evolving field. The UNDP will likely integrate the research outcomes into its broader strategies for sustainable finance and private sector development.
Beyond the Headlines
The UNDP's emphasis on sustainable finance and private sector development through this internship reflects a broader shift in international development. There is a growing recognition that public funds alone are insufficient to meet the ambitious targets of the SDGs. Engaging the private sector and leveraging impact investing are becoming central to development strategies, aiming to unlock significant capital and innovative solutions. This internship, therefore, is not just a training opportunity but a strategic move to embed sustainable finance principles within future global economic activities. It also underscores the evolving nature of work within international organizations, with remote opportunities becoming more prevalent, potentially democratizing access to such roles and diversifying the talent pool contributing to global challenges.
