What's Happening?
Nonprofit organizations, particularly those within the Jewish community, are increasingly at risk from AI-powered cyberattacks. According to a report by eJewishPhilanthropy, the latest AI model, Claude Mythos, developed by Anthropic, has demonstrated
the capability to exploit vulnerabilities in major operating systems and browsers. This development has raised significant concerns among tech and security experts about the potential for these tools to be used in cybercrime. Menny Barzilay, CTO of the Blavatnik Interdisciplinary Cyber Research Center, emphasized that cybercriminals are quick to adopt new technologies to enhance their criminal activities. Steve Gonzalez from the Anti-Defamation League highlighted that Jewish organizations face threats across physical, digital, and reputational domains, with cyber threats becoming increasingly prevalent. Between January and mid-April 2026, 190 cyberattacks were recorded against synagogues and Jewish organizations across 16 states, involving tactics such as website defacement, phishing, and data exposure.
Why It's Important?
The rise of AI-powered cyberattacks represents a significant challenge for nonprofit organizations, which often lack the resources to implement robust cybersecurity measures. These attacks not only threaten financial stability but also pose risks to sensitive information and the safety of individuals within these communities. The Jewish community, in particular, faces heightened risks due to the overlap between cyber threats and physical security concerns, driven by hate and extremism. The potential for AI tools to be used in identifying targets within these communities underscores the urgent need for enhanced cybersecurity measures. As cyber threats evolve, nonprofits must prioritize cybersecurity to protect their operations and the communities they serve.
What's Next?
Nonprofit organizations are likely to face increasing pressure to bolster their cybersecurity defenses. This may involve seeking additional funding and resources to implement advanced security measures and training staff to recognize and respond to cyber threats. Collaboration with cybersecurity experts and organizations like the Secure Community Network could provide valuable support in developing effective strategies to mitigate these risks. Additionally, there may be calls for greater awareness and policy initiatives to address the unique challenges faced by nonprofits in the digital age.
