Virginia-based startup Quartermaster has developed SmartMast, an advanced system designed to improve monitoring and data collection for maritime fleets. SmartMast consists of weather-resistant cameras and sensors mounted on a ship's mast, enabling real-time
data transmission. This system is more advanced than the current industry standard, the Automatic Identification System (AIS), which is prone to fraud. SmartMast acts as a 'hive mind' for ships, preventing data falsification. The project has attracted significant investor interest, raising $43 million in a Series A funding round led by First Round Capital and Quiet Capital. Currently, over 600 ships equipped with SmartMast cover more than 10 million square miles of ocean territory, aiding in security, logistics, scientific research, and maritime rescue operations.
