What's Happening?
Faculty members from four Pennsylvania community colleges, including Luzerne County Community College (LCCC), and several career-and-technical-education (CTE) teachers have completed specialized fiber optics training. This 'train-the-trainers certification'
program was provided by Light Brigade, a national fiber-optics program, with support from Amazon Web Services (AWS). The training, which took place at Lehigh Carbon Community College from August 3 to August 6, aimed to equip educators with practical, industry-based knowledge in the latest fiber optics technology and practices. Edward Kuehner, LCCC Applied Technology Department chair, and John Weaver, an LCCC HVAC Instructor, were among the thirteen faculty members who participated. They emphasized that this experience will allow them to strengthen their curriculum and better prepare students for the growing demand for fiber optic skills in the workforce. Nicholas Lee-Romagnolo, an AWS workforce development representative, highlighted the increasing demand for skilled technicians in the digital infrastructure.

This initiative is crucial for addressing the projected shortage of 300,000 skilled trade workers in Pennsylvania by 2030. By training educators in advanced fiber optics, community colleges can develop a robust in-state workforce capable of meeting the demands of the digital economy. These institutions, forming the Technology & Trades Consortium with aid from the Pennsylvania Commission for Community Colleges, are actively developing new fiber-optic technician programs for their students. Future fiber-optic training programs are expected to be announced, indicating a continued commitment to this area. The consortium's efforts are also part of PAWorks, a statewide initiative designed to promote skilled trades and address the looming workforce deficit. This ongoing collaboration aims to create a lasting pipeline of talent within Pennsylvania, ensuring that both secondary and post-secondary students are well-prepared for the evolving technological landscape and the demands of the 21st-century economy.
