What's Happening?
Laguna College of Art and Design (LCAD) is set to begin construction on its new Innovation Center starting the week of March 9. The two-story, 22,000-square-foot facility will include new classrooms, print labs, event and gallery space, and a cafe. During
construction, parking at LCAD's Big Bend campus will be limited, prompting the college to arrange temporary use of nearby public parking lots. The Laguna Beach City Council has approved a resolution allowing LCAD to rent parking spaces to mitigate the impact on students and faculty. The college will pay $5,000 for the temporary use of these spaces, with a shuttle service provided to transport students between the campus and the rented lots.
Why It's Important?
The construction of the Innovation Center represents a significant investment in LCAD's infrastructure, aiming to enhance the educational experience by providing state-of-the-art facilities. This development is part of LCAD's $100-million capital campaign, which has reached its midway point. The new center is expected to foster a more centralized and connected campus environment, benefiting students, faculty, and the broader community. The temporary parking arrangements highlight the challenges of managing construction projects in urban areas, where space is limited. The project underscores the importance of collaboration between educational institutions and local governments to address logistical challenges and support community development.
What's Next?
Construction of the Innovation Center is expected to continue through the year, with temporary parking arrangements in place until May 31 and resuming after the summer art festival season. LCAD will monitor the construction progress and may revisit the parking permit if the project extends into the following year. The college's capital campaign will continue to seek additional funding to support further developments. The completion of the Innovation Center will likely enhance LCAD's reputation and attract more students, contributing to the growth of the local economy and the cultural landscape of Laguna Beach.
