Florida’s wildlife agency has proposed new regulations aimed at enhancing protections for sloths imported into the state. This action comes four months after an investigation by Inside Climate News revealed that dozens of wild sloths died at a planned
Orlando tourism attraction called Sloth World. The proposed rules would require individuals and businesses holding permits for exotic animals to demonstrate sloth-specific experience, although this would not apply to existing permit holders. The controversy surrounding Sloth World gained international attention after over 50 sloths died at the facility. State records indicate that in late 2024, 21 sloths imported from Guyana died at a facility lacking basic amenities, followed by the deaths of 10 sloths from Peru. Subsequent imports also resulted in numerous deaths before the business closed. Necropsy reports attributed these deaths to diseases and severe physiological distress caused by capture, international shipment, environmental changes, and inadequate care. The new proposals include mandatory facility inspections before permits are issued. Dana Russell, a captain at the agency, stated that the goal is to implement more stringent structures and checks and balances to prevent similar tragedies.
