What's Happening?
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) is commencing the third and final phase of the 2025 Agricultural Resource Management Survey. This phase, starting in late
December, aims to collect comprehensive data on farm economics across the United States. The survey will gather detailed information on farm production costs, expenses, and financial conditions, which will aid in understanding farm operations and support agricultural policy and program development at both local and federal levels. NASS plans to contact nearly 40,000 producers nationwide, focusing on specific questionnaires related to the costs of production and expenditures for cotton, hog, and broiler operations. The data collected will contribute to the annual Farm Production Expenditures report, scheduled for release on July 24, 2026, and will be used by USDA’s Economic Research Service for further analysis.
Why It's Important?
The Agricultural Resource Management Survey is a critical tool for gathering farm financial data in the United States. The information collected helps inform decisions on agricultural policies and programs that affect farms and farm families. By understanding production costs and financial conditions, policymakers and agricultural organizations can better address economic challenges faced by the farming community. The survey's results will provide valuable insights into national farm spending trends, which are essential for developing strategies to support agriculture and rural communities. The confidentiality of the data ensures that individual operations are not identifiable, encouraging participation and ensuring the reliability of the data collected.
What's Next?
Following the data collection phase, NASS interviewers will reach out to farmers who have not yet responded to ensure comprehensive participation. The results of the survey will be published in the Farm Production Expenditures report in July 2026, providing a detailed overview of farm spending trends. This data will be crucial for researchers, policymakers, and agricultural organizations to understand and address the financial challenges in the agricultural sector. The ongoing analysis by USDA’s Economic Research Service will further enhance the understanding of farm finances, supporting sound agricultural decision-making.
