What's Happening?
A new £6.6 million tram bridge has been installed in Preston, North West, replacing a 200-year-old wooden structure. The new bridge connects Avenham Park in Preston city center with Penwortham in South
Ribble, providing a pedestrian and cycle link. The historic tram bridge was closed in 2019 due to the risk of collapse. The new 140-tonne bridge is expected to open in the spring, with the next phase focusing on completing the decking and panelling, installing handrails, and removing scaffolding. Construction began last year but was paused over the winter due to poor weather and breeding salmon in the River Ribble.
Why It's Important?
The installation of the new tram bridge is significant for local infrastructure, enhancing connectivity between Preston city center and South Ribble. It provides a safe and modern route for pedestrians and cyclists, promoting sustainable transport options. The project also preserves the historical significance of the area by replacing the old structure with a new one that maintains the link between these communities. This development is expected to boost local tourism and economic activity by improving access to Avenham Park and surrounding areas.
What's Next?
The next steps involve completing the construction work, including decking, panelling, and handrail installation. Once these are finished, the bridge will open to the public in the spring. Local authorities will likely focus on promoting the new bridge as a key feature of the area's transport network, potentially leading to increased foot traffic and economic benefits for local businesses.
