What's Happening?
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has officially approved the new common name 'metcyclofenstrobin' for a strobilurin fungicide developed by Syngenta Crop Protection AG. This approval
was finalized on November 7, 2025, after the objection period concluded without any challenges. The chemical, identified as methyl (2Z)-2-(5-cyclohexyl-2-methylphenoxy)-3-methoxy-2-propenoate, will be included in the March 2026 update of the XML data set for ISO 1750:2023. This standard defines preferred names and common names for pesticides and related chemicals, ensuring consistency and clarity in the agricultural industry.
Why It's Important?
The approval of 'metcyclofenstrobin' as a common name is significant for the agricultural sector, particularly for Syngenta, as it facilitates the global recognition and regulatory acceptance of their fungicide. This development is crucial for ensuring that the product can be marketed and used internationally without confusion or legal hurdles. For farmers and agricultural businesses, having a standardized name helps in the clear identification and application of the fungicide, which is essential for effective crop protection. The move also underscores the importance of international standards in promoting safe and efficient agricultural practices.
What's Next?
With the approval in place, Syngenta can proceed with the global distribution and marketing of their fungicide under the new name. The inclusion of 'metcyclofenstrobin' in the ISO 1750:2023 update will likely streamline regulatory processes in various countries, facilitating quicker adoption and use by farmers. Stakeholders in the agricultural industry, including regulatory bodies and farmers, will need to update their records and practices to align with the new naming convention. This change may also prompt other companies to seek similar approvals for their products, fostering innovation and competition in the agrochemical market.
