What's Happening?
SES and Infinite Orbits have signed a contract to conduct Europe's first commercial life extension mission in geostationary orbit (GEO), set to begin in 2027. Infinite Orbits' Endurance spacecraft will
launch, dock with an SES satellite, and perform life extension services, including station keeping and orbital relocation. The mission is supported by the European Commission's European Innovation Council and cofunded by France's national government.
Why It's Important?
The partnership between SES and Infinite Orbits highlights the growing importance of satellite life extension missions in optimizing satellite economics. By extending the operational life of GEO satellites, SES can continue to deliver value to customers and reduce investment into replacement satellites. The mission demonstrates the financial benefits of longer satellite lifespans, as GEO satellites often burn up their fuel before their payloads die off.
Beyond the Headlines
The SES-Infinite Orbits partnership is more than just flag-planting for France; it represents a strategic move to enhance Europe's competitiveness in the global space industry. The mission aligns with France's goal of becoming a leader in satellite technology, supported by the France 2030 program. The collaboration could pave the way for more innovative satellite servicing solutions, extending revenues and reducing costs for satellite operators.
