What's Happening?
Poupard Place, a new 48-unit apartment building in Northbrook, has opened to provide affordable housing for individuals with developmental or intellectual disabilities. Developed by the Housing Opportunity Development Corporation in partnership with the Village
of Northbrook, the building offers units to those earning up to 60% of the Area Median Income. The project, supported by public and private funds, includes ADA accessibility features and has received high demand with 600 applications. The development is part of Northbrook's efforts to increase affordable housing options, following the adoption of an inclusionary housing ordinance in 2020.
Why It's Important?
The opening of Poupard Place addresses a critical need for affordable housing for people with disabilities in Northbrook and the surrounding areas. It represents a significant step towards inclusivity and accessibility in housing, providing a model for other communities. The project highlights the importance of public-private partnerships in addressing housing shortages and demonstrates the impact of local government policies, such as inclusionary zoning, in expanding affordable housing stock. This development not only supports individuals with disabilities but also strengthens community ties and promotes social equity.
