Dale Sanders, a 91-year-old hiker known by his trail name 'Grey Beard,' has reclaimed his record as the oldest person to complete the entire 2,193-mile Appalachian Trail. Sanders began his journey on September 6 in West Virginia and finished on Monday
atop Mount Katahdin in Maine. Despite falling 71 times during his trek, including six hard falls that led to a brief hospitalization for a pinched nerve, he persevered. The Appalachian Trail Conservancy defines a thru-hike as completing all sections of the trail within a year, allowing for pauses. Sanders previously set the record in 2017 at age 82, which was later surpassed by M.J. Eberhart, 83, in 2021.
