What's Happening?
The redevelopment of Tampa's MOSI site is progressing with the design phase of a new indoor sports complex. The Board of County Commissioners has approved an interlocal agreement with the Tampa Sports
Authority, allocating over $3 million to the project. The complex is part of a $70 million redevelopment plan for the 73-acre MOSI site, which includes multifamily housing, retail space, and a hotel. The sports facility will feature 11 all-purpose courts for volleyball and basketball, along with amenities such as a sports lounge and event space. The project aims to enhance sports tourism and drive economic development in Hillsborough County.
Why It's Important?
The MOSI site redevelopment represents a significant investment in Tampa's infrastructure and economic growth. The indoor sports complex is expected to attract sports tourism, boosting local businesses and creating job opportunities. By leveraging the MOSI site, the project aims to transform the area into a hub for science, technology, and innovation, contributing to the county's long-term development goals. The initiative also highlights the importance of strategic planning and collaboration between local government and private developers in achieving community objectives.
What's Next?
As the project moves into the design phase, stakeholders will focus on finalizing plans and securing necessary approvals. The design team will work on integrating the sports complex with the existing MOSI site, ensuring efficient use of space and resources. The county will continue to engage with the master developer to coordinate efforts and explore additional opportunities, such as an ice hockey facility. The goal is to open the sports complex by 2028, with ongoing developments expected to contribute to the area's transformation.
