What's Happening?
The UK's National Armaments Director Group has awarded a £20 million ($26 million) contract to Lockheed Martin UK for the development of an advanced hypersonic target program, known as Project Bowline.
This initiative is part of the Ministry of Defence's Science and Technology Oriented Research and Development in Missile Defence (STORM) program. Lockheed Martin UK will design, manufacture, and test the hypersonic target at its Bedfordshire facility. The target is intended to simulate next-generation high-speed threats, traveling at speeds above Mach 5, to provide a realistic test environment for future missile defense systems. The project aims to enhance the UK's capabilities in hypersonic systems modeling, manufacturing, and testing, while fostering collaboration across industry and academia. A live flight demonstration is scheduled for 2027 at the MoD Hebrides Range.
