What's Happening?
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) have launched the SEHAT mission to integrate agriculture, nutrition, and public health in India. The initiative aims to address malnutrition and lifestyle
diseases by promoting biofortified crops, integrated farming systems, and strategies to prevent non-communicable diseases. The mission seeks to align agricultural research with national health goals, emphasizing the role of agriculture in improving population health.
Why It's Important?
The SEHAT mission represents a significant step towards a holistic approach to health, recognizing agriculture as a key determinant of public health. By focusing on nutrition and preventive health, the initiative aims to reduce the burden of malnutrition and lifestyle diseases in India. The collaboration between health and agriculture sectors highlights the potential for inter-sectoral convergence to achieve sustainable health outcomes. This approach could serve as a model for other countries facing similar health challenges.
