What's Happening?
Hennepin County has partnered with the University of Minnesota Extension SuperShelf program since 2019 to enhance local food shelves. This collaboration aims to transform food shelf spaces and systems, creating more welcoming, choice-based environments
that prioritize healthier options. Seven food shelves in Hennepin County have already undergone these transformations, which include improvements like new shelving, refrigerators, freezers, signage, and paint. The SuperShelf model focuses on providing shoppers with dignity and choice, ensuring access to fresh, nutritious, and culturally relevant foods. This initiative addresses the demand for better food access and aims to prevent and manage chronic diseases among vulnerable populations. The program has worked with 100 food shelves statewide, including 16 in Hennepin County, to promote shopper choice and foster human dignity.

What's Next?
The SuperShelf program is continuing to expand and evolve. In 2024, Hennepin County and the University of Minnesota Extension shifted to a new cohort model, the first of its kind in Minnesota, to keep pace with increased demand and limited capacity. Six food shelves are currently participating in this cohort, working towards SuperShelf certification in 2026. Additionally, Hennepin County, with funding from the Statewide Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP), is supporting college food shelves in becoming SuperShelf locations. North Hennepin Community College has already achieved this, and Hennepin Technical College's two campuses are planning to follow suit. Despite the end of federal funding for the SNAP-Ed program, which originally supported SuperShelf, the Extension is exploring alternative funding methods. The next round of applications for food shelves to join the program will be accepted in late fall 2026.
