What's Happening?
India's new labour codes, effective from November 2025, aim to significantly increase women's participation in the workforce by enhancing job safety, security, and accessibility. The reforms include provisions for safer working conditions, night shifts
in sectors like IT and healthcare, and extended maternity leave. A white paper by the All India Organisation of Employers highlights the potential for these changes to raise female workforce participation from 23.3% in 2017-18 to 41.7% in 2023-24. The codes consolidate existing laws into a coherent framework, emphasizing social security and workplace safety.
Why It's Important?
The implementation of these labour codes represents a significant step towards gender equality in the workplace. By addressing safety and security concerns, the reforms aim to create a more inclusive work environment, potentially leading to economic growth and increased productivity. The focus on maternity benefits and flexible work arrangements could help retain women in the workforce, reducing the gender gap in employment. However, the success of these reforms depends on effective implementation and the responsiveness of employers and markets.
