The European Space Agency (ESA) has announced funding commitments totaling €902.2 million as part of the European Launcher Challenge (ELC), aimed at enhancing Europe's space launch capabilities. The funding will
support five companies: Germany's Isar Aerospace and Rocket Factory Augsburg, France's Maiaspace, Spain's PLD Space, and the UK's Orbex. The ELC is structured in two components: Component A involves ESA purchasing launch services to demonstrate initial capabilities, while Component B focuses on co-funding capacity upgrades. The program requires companies to demonstrate orbital launch capabilities by 2027 and upgrade their launch capacity by 2028. Germany has pledged the largest contributions, supporting both local and international companies, while other nations have focused on backing local competitors.
