What's Happening?
In Cerro Castillo National Park, located in Patagonia, the endangered huemul deer, also known as the south Andean deer, is facing a significant threat from a disease spread by domestic livestock. The disease, caused by the bacterium Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis,
results in abscesses in the lymph nodes and organs of the deer. To combat this, Rewilding Chile, a non-profit organization, has established a rehabilitation center dedicated to treating these deer. Recently, the center successfully treated its first patient, a young stag named Distraido, who was released back into the wild. This marks a significant milestone in huemul conservation efforts, as the species is critically endangered with only about 1,500 individuals remaining across Chile and Argentina.

The successful treatment and release of Distraido is a pivotal moment for the conservation of the huemul deer, a species that is integral to the biodiversity of the Patagonian region. Rewilding Chile plans to continue monitoring Distraido and other huemul deer to assess the long-term effectiveness of their treatment strategies. The organization is also working on expanding its conservation efforts through The Huemul Corridor project, which seeks to reconnect fragmented populations of the deer across the Andes. This involves collaboration with local and national authorities to ensure the protection of habitats and the implementation of sustainable livestock management practices to prevent further disease transmission. The success of these efforts could serve as a model for similar conservation initiatives worldwide.
