What's Happening?
The University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture (UTIA) has initiated a new program called F.U.S.E. Animal Science – the Fellowship for Undergraduate Scientific Exchange in Animal Science. This five-year program, funded by a $750,000 grant from the USDA
National Institute of Food and Agriculture, aims to equip undergraduate students with the necessary research, Extension, communication, and professional skills for careers in animal science and agriculture. Led by professors Phillip Myer and Jennie Ivey from the UT Department of Animal Science, the program will recruit students nationally from animal science, agricultural, and related life science disciplines. Fellows will engage in a year-long sequence of virtual and in-person experiences, focusing on one of six animal science areas: animal nutrition, livestock production (including robotics and automation), livestock gene editing and genomics, animal disease (immunology and parasitism), animal welfare, or animal reproduction. A key feature is an integrated mentoring approach, where each fellow works with a team comprising research and Extension faculty, a graduate student mentor, and a county Extension agent, ensuring exposure to both scientific knowledge generation and its practical application.

What's Next?
Recruitment for the inaugural cohort of F.U.S.E. Animal Science fellows is slated to commence in January 2027, with the first group beginning their fellowship later that year. Participants will undergo intensive summer research and Extension experiences, culminating in the finalization of their projects and further development of communication skills. Fellows will also have opportunities to present their work at the American Society of Animal Science Annual Meeting and a dedicated F.U.S.E. Animal Science Conference hosted by UTIA. These presentations will serve as platforms for students to engage with scientists, Extension professionals, industry representatives, and other leaders, fostering crucial professional connections. The program's ongoing success will be measured by its ability to produce well-trained professionals who can contribute to advancements in animal agriculture, ensuring a continuous supply of expertise for the sector.
